Li Hanwei has long been interested in platforms, especially in the way the image economy is categorized and quantified. In his work “Mr. Spit”, Li Hanwei started to use “documentary photography” as a starting point for his work. These works are not documentary photography in the strict sense, but use the information and data contributed by software “edges”, such as app navigation maps, pop-up advertisements, and popular symbols in Shanzhai culture, as the raw material for constructing image space. Thus, his foundational images demonstrate the subjective expression of “documentary photography,” inadvertently revealing how image space is redefined according to traffic distribution, and exploring how elements of image communication, including public images and meme maps on social media, construct image perceptions through non-traditional communication paths.
